FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. This governing body responsible for food security regulated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Food License is issued by FSSAI which provides a brand the legal permission to sell food in India. FASSI registration required to food operator involved in manufacturing, processing, storing, distributing and selling of food, 
restaurant business required to compulsion to get registration. FASSI is the legal certification and sets a benchmark of food quality as well. Obtaining an FSSAI license is mandatory before starting any food business operation in India. You will receive a 14 digit unique registration number which is printed on their food products after getting registration number.


Types of FSSAI License

The type of food license to be obtained depends on the scale of the business and the type of business activity and turnover of the food business operator is involved in. Only after submitting the documents required for FSSAI license, the application would be considered by the government authority. There are three types of FSSAI License:

 

1.    FSSAI Central License-  this Central Food License issued by the Central Government. The Central License covers all the offices across the country. A central license is acquired by restaurants and food business owners when they have an annual turnover of greater than 20 crores. The tenure of a Central License is minimum 1 year to maximum 5 years.

 

2.    FSSAI State License- It is mandatory for all Small and medium scale enterprises to acquire the FSSAI State License. It is issued by the particular state government where the party is willing to start a food business. It is important to inform that the business must be operating in only one state only. If the annual revenue of the company falls between 12 lakhs to 20 lakhs then it would need to register for a State License. The maximum tenure of this license is 5 years and the minimum is 1 year.

 

3.    FSSAI Basic Registration- The small businesses with a low turnover of up to 12 lakh are required to apply for an FSSAI Basic License. This license is also issued by the concerned State Government. The minimum and maximum tenure of this license is 1 year and 5 years respectively.


·       PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING FSSAI REGISTRATION

1)    FSSAI registration is initiated by submitting application to the food and safety department.

2) This application can be accepted or it may be rejected by the Department within 7 days from the application date and the fact has to be intimated to the applicant in writing

3)    If the application is accepted, then the department will grant a registration certificate with the registration number and the photo of the applicant.

4)    Food business operator should prominently display the certificate of registration at the place of business during the business hours.
